Terms of Use
This website is run by Kindred Keepsakes, a sole proprietorship in Ontario, Canada (“we”, “us”). By using this site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.
What this site is
This site shows our work and links to our Etsy shop. We don’t sell anything directly here. Purchases are made on Etsy and are also covered by Etsy’s own terms and by our Etsy shop policies.
Portraits are artistic interpretations
Every portrait is an artistic interpretation of the photo you provide. It is not an exact copy, a photograph or a guarantee of likeness. Small differences from your photo are normal, and results depend on the quality of the photo and on the natural slate itself. Examples shown on this site are for illustration, and your slate will differ.
Your photos and wording
By sending us a photo or wording, you confirm that you own it or have the right to use it, and that it doesn’t infringe anyone else’s rights. You allow us to use it to make your order. Text is engraved exactly as you give it to us, so please check spelling and dates carefully.
Our content
The photos, designs, text and logos on this site belong to Kindred Keepsakes. You’re welcome to share a link to the site, but please don’t copy, resell or reuse our images or designs without written permission. When you order, you are buying the engraved slate, not the design file or the right to reproduce the design.
Using your slate safely
Natural slate can have rough or sharp edges and is breakable. Handle it with care and keep it away from young children. It is a decorative keepsake, not a toy, and isn’t intended for direct contact with food. You’re responsible for how and where you display or use it.
Limitation of liability
This site and its information are provided “as is”. To the fullest extent the law allows, Kindred Keepsakes is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses arising from using this site or from our products. Our total liability for any claim relating to an order is limited to the amount you paid for that order. We aren’t responsible for damage that happens after delivery, such as drops, outdoor weather, freezing or misuse. Nothing here limits any rights you have under applicable law that can’t be limited.
Links to other sites
We link to Etsy and may link to other sites. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their content or practices.
Changes and governing law
We may update these terms and this site at any time. The date at the top shows the latest update. These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
Privacy Policy
We respect your privacy and follow Canada’s privacy law (PIPEDA).
- We don’t collect personal information on this site. There are no accounts, forms, comments, newsletter sign-ups or checkout here. We don’t use analytics or advertising trackers, and we don’t set cookies ourselves.
- Orders are handled by Etsy. When you buy, Etsy collects your name, address, payment details and messages under Etsy’s privacy policy. We receive what we need to make and ship your order, such as your shipping address, the photo and details you send, and your messages. We use them only to fulfil your order and help you with it. How we handle order information is also covered in our Etsy shop policies.
- We don’t sell or rent your information.
- Fonts and hosting. This site’s font is stored on the site itself, so nothing loads from Google or other outside services. Our web host may keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses and the pages requested) as part of running the site. We don’t receive or use that information ourselves.
- Your choices. To ask what we hold about you, or to have it deleted, send us a message through our Etsy shop.
Shipping
- We currently ship within Canada only.
- Each slate is made to order and is usually ready to ship in 3–5 business days. If you asked for a preview, the time starts once you approve it.
- Orders ship from Ontario, usually with Canada Post and with tracking. We may use another carrier if needed.
- Delivery times are estimates. Once an order is with the carrier, delays are outside our control. If you need your order by a certain date, message us before ordering.
- Please make sure your shipping address is correct when you order. We aren’t responsible for orders delivered to an incorrect address that was provided to us.
Returns and Refunds
Every slate is custom-made for you, so we don’t accept returns, exchanges or change-of-mind refunds.
If your slate arrives damaged: message us through Etsy within 7 days of delivery with (1) photos of the package as it arrived, with the shipping label visible, and (2) clear photos of the slate from several angles. We review every case and may ask for the slate to be returned before any replacement or refund. If we approve a claim, we decide whether to offer a replacement or a refund. Damage after delivery isn’t covered.
If there’s a problem with your order, please message us first. We’ll do our best to sort it out.
Care
- Indoor display is recommended. It keeps your slate looking its best the longest.
- Outdoor display: seal the back of the slate as well as the front, choose a sheltered spot out of direct sun, and bring it inside during harsh weather. Water that freezes can crack natural stone. Re-seal with a clear sealant spray from time to time.
- Cleaning: wipe gently with a damp cloth and water only. Don’t scrub, and avoid alcohol and harsh cleaners. Not dishwasher safe.
- Natural slate varies. Colour, thickness, texture and edges differ from stone to stone, and small marks and chips are part of the material. No two slates are identical.
- Slate isn’t strong enough to be stepped on, so place it somewhere secure.
How our designs are made
We create each portrait design with digital tools, including AI, guided by our own design process. Each slate is then laser-engraved, and finished and packed by hand in Ontario, Canada.
